Artist's Statement

I studied Art History and Fine Art in school and have experience in sculpture, drawing, painting, ceramics, jewelry, and printmaking. Drawing inspiration from art throughout the ages, I found myself intrigued by the creative process and have spent my life in pursuit of understanding it.

"Through my exposure to Art History, I found myself drawn to the expressive side of the arts…expression of a thought, feeling, or experience. I create with that outlook in mind."

In 1980, I discovered photography. I had studied the surreal photographs of Man Ray, the modernist photographs of Alfred Stieglitz, and the pictorial photographs of Edward Weston, among others, while in college. After all my earlier studies, black & white photography became a logical vehicle for my personal expression of the beauty of the world around me. In my on-going efforts to depict what I see and how I feel about a subject, I eventually moved from interpreting the world with traditional black and white photography to infrared photography, recording the light that lies just beyond the visible spectrum. This year, I made the switch to digital. After capturing an image with an infrared filter attached to my digital camera, I turn to my digital darkroom to process and print my photographs.

Infrared photographs are surreal by nature, capturing light that is not visible to the naked eye. Because of this, every photograph becomes a discovery into the mystery of light. I find this air of mystery to be stimulating and extremely exciting.
