I have been trying to simulate an IR effect using Paint Shop Pro 5 or later. After much trial and error, I have come up with the following method.
After opening an image in PSP, Select All (Select>Select All), then Copy (Edit>Copy) and Paste as a new layer (Edit>Paste as a new layer). We will be working with the new layer.
Convert the image to Greyscale (Color>Greyscale), then Convert it to 16 million colors (Color>Increase Color Depth>16 Million Colors). The image must be 16 million colors in order to apply some of the effects. On the Layers tool bar, turn off the background layer leaving only the 2nd layer visible. It is now time to make adjustments to the image. Adjust the Highlights to slightly blow out, the Midtones to just above half and the Shadows to 0 (Color>Adjust>Highlight/Midtone/Shadow). Now, apply Gaussian blur (Image>Blur>Gaussian Blur) at about a setting of 4 or 5 and add Noise (Image>Noise) at a setting of 32. Convert the image to Greyscale (Color>Greyscale) again and set back to 16 million colors (Color>Increase Color Depth>16 Million Colors). On the Layers tool bar, set the 2nd layer to about 65 -75 opaque. Then turn back on the background layer and Merge both layers (Layers>Merge>Merge All). Add some sharpness with the Unsharp mask (Image>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask). The image can now be saved in any format desired.
